Southern California Soaring

As Southern California's Premier Sailplane destination, Sky Sailing offers rides of one or two passengers, instruction in the art of Soaring, and a place for the Glider community to meet and practice their sport. Soaring is the flight of a sailplane or glider, by using the energy produced by gliding along on the air-currents, much like a powered airplane. Learning to soar in a sailplane is the best way to begin to learn to fly.

In operation since 1959, Sky Sailing is a world leader in the Sport of Soaring. Having pilots that feature their skill in the Miramar Air show each year, as well as being the home to two National Champions. Garret and Boyd Willat have each claimed trophies in National competitions.

"Delightful experience! I did a 30minute flight with a high performance plane. A small plane towed us up and when we got to the right height I got to pull the release and then we were gliding! We did some nice gentle soaring/sight seeing and then I got to be the pilot and steer the plane and adjust the altitude/speed! We did some rollercoaster moves and it was exhilarating! I got to sit in the front and had the best views! It was a clear day and I could juuust see downtown San Diego in the distance. A go-pro is attached and recorded the flight and the memory card is complementary. The pilot and office staff were very friendly, laid back, and helpful. They have a super sweet office cat and dog which rounded out the experience for me. 10/10 would recommend, I plan to go back and try an acrobatic ride next!"

"Had an amazing introductory flight with an amazing, professional instructor. We were towed up to 5000 feet above the airfield and he coached me through basic turns and manuvering. We found thermals and climbed around the Mt. Palomar area with unlimited visibility. The views were stunning and it was great fun learning how sailplanes can stay aloft for hours riding the rising currents. A GoPro video or photos is included which is a great memory. Will do it again and hope to earn a license one day."

"Super fun experience and great service. From front office to pilots the team is excellent. It is a lot of fun. Note: the gliders are a bit small so two people in the back are snug. I would recommend the longer flights. Once you are up in the air you will not want to come down!"
